In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
